We will look at the events that were to take place on 19 th August 1942.   The events at Dieppe, France, where the Allies carried out an unsuccessful amphibious attack on the German-occupied port of Dieppe.   6,086 infantry troops notably Canadian, which were supported by a regiment of tanks were put ashore from a naval operation which was protected by RAF fighters. For a short period, the port was captured, and to test the feasibility of the landing and to gather intelligence. German coastal defences, port structures and important buildings were demolished.  2024 marks the 80 th anniversary of Allied Invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord, the largest seaborne invasion, codenamed Operation Neptune, often referred to as D-Day, 6 th June.  Notable the day is best known as the Longest Day.  Prior to the amphibious landings on the 6 th , this was preceded by an extensive aerial and naval bombardment.   shortly after midnight, an airborne assault of 24,000 American, British and Canadian airborne troops landed.   Later that morning, 6.30, on a 50 mile stretch of the Normandy coast, troops landed on one of five sectors, named Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword.      During the first day, the Allies failed to achieve their goals.   Carentan, Saint-Lo and Bayeux were remained in German hands.   Caen wasn’t captured until the 21 st July.
