1937, construction work began, and 13th May, RAF Linton-on-Ouse
finally opened as a bomber airfield.
Bombers would take off from the airfield during the Second World War and drop propaganda leaflets over Germany. The airfield was used also from bombing raids on Norway, Netherlands, Germany and Italy. However, 12th May 1941, three Luftwaffe aircrafts bombed RAF Linton-on-Ouse, resulting in 13 airmen, including the station commander deaths. These 13 men included.

William Douglas Weir was born 4th September 1919. His parents, John Stuart and Gladys Mary Weir
nee. Jones. They were married July 1915
at St. Gabriels church.
Wiliam Douglas baptism was at Swansea Christ Church.
By the time of the 1921 Census, the family were living at 54
Brunswick Street. Scottish born John S., 32, was employed by Harris Bros, Cambrian
Dry Dock, as a Boiler Maker. Gladys, 29,
born at Cape Verde. Also, present is her
brother Sidney B., Jones employed at Prince of Wales Dry Docks as a Fitters
Helper. Two children, John Malcolm, 4
and William Douglas, 1 (below)
